Bio

Karen Sydney is a textile artist based in Los Angeles, California.

Raised in a family of seamstresses, she learned to sew at a very young age. She graduated from college with a degree in Politics and planned to go to law school, but the drive to make eventually became too powerful.

Continuing to sew her own clothes on nights and weekends, she started to teach herself new crafts: screenprinting, stenciling, weaving, fabric design, and — most important to her current body of work — hand embroidery.

Certainly laborious and time-consuming, embroidering by hand is nevertheless when Karen is at her most content. Truly in a flow state. Her artworks have grown in size and scale as she has pushed her skills and her medium to create ever bolder and more ambitious pieces. With each one-of-a-kind work, Karen honors a lineage of female makers while moving textile art into the future.
