Bio

Catherine Andre is a theater and film director who makes dark funny love stuff about messy women. A recent graduate of AFI, Catherine started directing short films and plays as a teenager at Interlochen Arts Academy. Eager to put her work in context, she studied literature and theater at Princeton University where she won numerous university awards for her interdisciplinary creative work. As a theater director in NYC, Catherine worked on radical feminist reinterpretations of classical plays Off- and Off-Off-Broadway until, in 2018, she won a directing Fulbright Fellowship and moved to Eastern Europe.

Over the next five years, Catherine assisted theater auteurs at storied institutions across Europe (Opera Bastille, Bulandra Theatre, Hungarian Theater in Cluj) and developed her own work that combined film, theater, and visceral performance. In 2023, Catherine returned to the United States to attend AFI Conservatory as a Directing Fellow where she directed five narrative shorts and developed two feature-length scripts, one of which was a semifinalist for the 2026 Sundance Labs. Her thesis film, BEHIND THE MASK, won Amazon’s Innovative Storytelling grant and premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Catherine’s work draws upon her vast academic, theatrical, and cross-cultural experiences to blend genres, toy with traditions, and subvert audience expectations. As a female director of South Asian and European heritage, Catherine is proud to tell stories about women of color who do not fit into easy boxes. www.catherine-andre.com.
