At this special New York preview, audiences will get an early look at two original new musicals heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer: TRUNK SONGS (book, lyrics & music by Maria DiFabbio) and MUSIC & MURDER BY… (book & lyrics by Jessica Welsh '14, music by Wikus van der Hoven, directed by Emma Canalese).
Presented as a double-bill showcase of select songs, the set features performances by friends and colleagues of the writers, many of whom are affiliated with the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop. Join us for an intimate evening of new works before they travel overseas.
TRUNK SONGS: A songwriter takes a solo road trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains, hoping a change of scenery - and a lot of bluegrass - will bring her closer to the life she wants. But what begins as a flight of fancy becomes something deeper, as love and music intertwine through charged memories, imagined futures, and conversations with her musician father. Along the way, women travelers who came before her appear, echoing her longing for both freedom and connection. Trunk Songs is a summer awakening exploring the art of skipping town, and making music of your heart's desires.
MUSIC & MURDER BY…: A last-ditch writer’s retreat to finish writing a new musical turns deadly when two of the writers decide the only way to save their show is to rid themselves (permanently) of their insufferable collaborator – only to find the plot spiral out of control when his faded Broadway diva mother crashes the retreat with a sinister scheme of her own.
