This August, alumni artist Elise Rise '15 is part of the creative team developing Future. Fortune. Fate., is a large-scale installation that will headline Burning Man’s iconic Man Pavilion.
Conceived by Ilan Telmont of House of Yes, and built in collaboration with artists including Elise Rise and Chris Carnabuci, the piece takes inspiration from the Japanese ritual of Omikuji—where a fortune is drawn at random to divine one’s future.
Inspired by the ancient Japanese practice of Omikuji, where fortunes are drawn at random to divine the future, this installation asks deeper questions. Can we reframe what we think we know? Can a message shift meaning depending on who receives it, or how they feel when they do?
This is a collective ritual, powered by hundreds of voices. A Wheel of Fate, 88 numbered drawers, and hundreds of fortunes written and submitted by contributors from around the world. Some fortunes feel like encouragement. Others might catch you off guard. Either way, the response is yours to shape. If your fortune unsettles you, there’s a path to redemption: step outside. Do something kind for someone else. That act reframes the moment, reshapes the meaning, and evolves the outcome. Nothing is fixed. Everything can shift.
Future. Fortune. Fate. will be installed directly beneath the Man in Black Rock City this August.
