Jill Sigman '89 *98 presents "This is where we are"
In a work part improvised, part choreographed, part movement, part dialogue, Sigman tackles the difficult questions. Without trying to find solutions, agreement, or even closure, she brings together a group of fascinating dancers with diverse histories to explore the predicaments of this volatile moment. As a micro “body politic” they process questions around inflammation and healing, defense and protection, identity and assumption, contamination, epigenetics, and where we are headed. Their movement explorations have been informed by conversations with practitioners working in racial pharmacology, forest fire, trauma psychology, medicine, domestic violence, and multiple spiritual traditions.
This piece is about the people who perform it. The cast is an extraordinary group of dancers who differ in age, race, disability status, and gender identity, who come from different parts of the world and carry different histories of dance in their bodies. We have come together in discussion and movement to explore ways that American society is currently in need of healing and to dance together in a landscape of our different perspectives. The process is more dialogical than dialectical. Performers include Lorene Bouboushian, iele paloumpis, Evelyn Sanchez Narvaez, Jill Sigman, Charmaine Warren, Krishna Washburn, and Marýa Wethers.
